Effect of diuretics on sodium, potassium and chloride levels- a cross sectional study

Background: Diuretics are one of the widely used class drugs in various cardiovascular and other disorders. However, they can cause metabolic adverse effects, electrolyte imbalance being among important changes.Methods: A cross sectional study was conducted which patients diagnosed with hypertension for at least month were included. Over a period 6 months enrolled irrespective whether taking diuretics or not. Demographic details, drug therapy levels recorded proforma. Data analyzed difference serum between diuretic nondiuretic groups as well different groups.Results: Out total 177 participants, 71 on therapy. There significant mean sodium (S. Na), potassium K) chlorine Cl) (P<0.05). Hyponatremia, hypokalemia hyperkalemia observed. Thiazide group showed significantly greater hyponatremia compared to (P=0.028). Hyperkalemia observed participants receiving K sparing combination loop diuretics. Old age number comorbidities negative association S. Na. Females had more than male participants.Conclusions: The confirms that abnormalities electrolytes namely Na levels. age, female sex risk factors hyponatremia.
